The Integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) with Green Design and Construction

Posted by: Bhushan Avastthi | Posted on: September 20th, 2013

Green building has set the design and construction industry on fire. With the integration of BIM tools green building project teams are increasingly finding how BIM tools can be helpful in achieving more sustainable outcomes. These tools can help in providing immediate insight into how design process can lead to a greener future. BIM also encourages an integrated design process which is critical for the success of green projects. According to SmartMarket Report issued by McGraw_Hill Construction “Only 17% of firms practicing Green BIM reported that they currently take advantage of more than half of the potential BIM offers for green projects. According to another statistics “Only 17% of green BIM practitioners realize more than 50% of BIM’s potential to help in achieving green objectives.” There is a growing potential for BIM to improve sustainable outcomes.

There is a huge demand for using BIM for green projects, however; so far market penetration has been limited. According to statistics from SmartMarket Report issued by McGraw_Hill Construction “78% of BIM users are currently not utilizing Green BIM expect to be doing it in within three years, including which about 17% claim that it will happen in the next 12 months.” There is a need for education for BIM practitioners to use green building projects. There are two key factors that determine the success of the integration of BIM and green design and construction:

  • More education about how BIM saves time and money in the design and construction process
  • An increased use of BIM in operations and maintenance stage rather than during design and construction stage

Now the key question is how to influence non-green BIM companies to start using BIM on green projects. The answer is owner demand (85%) and time and money savings (76%). According to the statistics shown by the SmartMarket Report; it is also evident that about 68% of Architectural & Engineering firms find the availability of BIM tools highly essential. According to the report; it is also evident that nearly all firms involved in Green BIM use BIM for new green construction projects.

So, it is probable in the near future; we will see an increase in the number of BIM companies adopting green building projects.
